Authoring the content of an MSMC objective item

Authoring the content of an multiple selection multiple choice (MSMC) objective item consists of entering the stem/stimulus (exam question) and answer choices for the item.

Note: An MSMC objective item allows the candidate to choose one or more answer choices when taking an exam. A single selection multiple choice (SSMC) objective item allows the candidate to choose only one answer choice when taking an exam.

While authoring, you may format and spell check item text, and add tables, images and audio/video clips, and symbols.

To author the content of an MSMC objective item:

1. Navigate to the Content tab.

2. In the Stem and/or Stimulus field (shown below), enter the question using rich text, images and audio/video clips (called exhibits), symbols, and tables.

In the example below, the user has entered a question regarding standard deviation and expected return for four sample investments:

3. Select the number of Answer Choices that this exam question will have (highlighted in green, above). An exam question may have 1 through 5 answer choices. Once you select the number of choices, the screen will populate with the appropriate number of checkboxes and blank fields to enter the answer choices.

4. Enter each answer choice for the item using rich text, symbols, tables, and images.

In the example below, the user has entered four answer choices, and then chosen "Investment B" and "Investment D" as correct answers.

6. You have the option of moving each answer choice up or down in the order you wish them to appear on the test. To do this, click the appropriate up or down arrow on the right of the answer choice you wish to move (highlighted in red, below).

Note that the Pro! system is configured to lock the position of answer choices; all are locked or all are unlocked (highlighted in green, below). If Pro! unlocks positions and you manually order them as per the instructions in this step, the Pro! system may still re-position an item's answer choices in order to balance the key distribution.

6. Select an estimated difficulty level of this item (Low, Medium, or High):

7. Click the Save button. The item has been saved, and assigned a new Item ID by the system (highlighted below). Note that a series of Messages and Suggestions may appear at the bottom of the screen; these messages serve to remind you to enter other information for the new item, such as Classifications, Rationales, and References.
